Waterfront Life

Adjacent to Pier 39 and the aquarium by the bay you’ll find many a sailboat, fishing boat and cruiser docked with some of their owners making a living from fishing and cruising.  There is literally a sea of vessels docked along the bay waterfront.  Walking along the waterfront you would think you were in a sleepy seaside community until you turn left and view the high rise apartment and office buildings.  There is nothing more invigorating than walking in this area early in the morning when the fog is so thick that you barely recognize the Golden Gate and the pier is awakening to the occasional foghorn.  The boats dancing to the waves and the seagulls taking their morning flight.  You can hear only seabirds and your own thoughts.  The sun peaks through the clouds and the sea mist kisses your cheek and you know intuitively this is paradise if only for that moment.

Pier 39 Giant Crab

Pier 39 is one of the main tourist attractions in the city and this crab for some reason is a shutterbugs dream.  The crab made of some type of steel and flowers sits at the  main entrance on Jefferson and the embarcadero.  On any given day or night you will see dozens and dozens of tourists snapping shots of this oddity.  Now I’m not an artist but I think this sculpture is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen.  The photo is better than the live view, believe me.  I would have thought that maybe the main sculpture should be perhaps a sea lion?  What fascinates me is the fact that tourists love this thing.  Maybe I just don’t have any taste when it comes to art or maybe it’s the oddity of it all.  I’m curious what all of you think?
