Windmills and Sand Dunes
This old windmill which is housed in Golden Gate Park just right across the Great Highway from Ocean Beach and the Cliff House has been around since the turn of the century. In the 1900’s the land which is known as the Sunset and Richmond districts were all sand dunes. It was originally built in order to pump water to the reservoir so that the land could be cultivated into what is now known as Golden Gate Park. Over the years the windmill has deteriorated. The parks dept. has just recently begun to renovate the windmill and the area in which it is situated. There is a beautiful little flower garden located on the grounds and it’s really a nice spot to just sit and relax. It’s not far from the Cliff House and very close to the Beach Chalet and Park Chalet restaurants. I took the photo above one day while walking in that area. If you are even near the beach make sure to stop and take a look at the old Dutch windmill.
