Pier 39 Christmas Tree

Published by jodapoet under San Francisco, Travel Edit This

I had fully intended to get to the tree lighting ceremonies the day after Thanksgiving at Ghirardelli Square and Union Square to get on the spot video of the actual lighting’s.  However since I spent Thanksgiving with friends at Pier 39 and was there late I was way too tired to get to any of the lighting’s the next day.  So, these photos which I shot on Thanksgiving at Pier 39 will have to do.  The tree is so tall that if you stand there and look up at the top, you will literally fall over.   I wanted to get a shot of the top of the tree with the clouds in the background.  The tree is decorated with red, gold and silver ornaments and cute snowmen of which one of these days I’m going to grab one when no one is looking, they are so cute.  This shot above was taken right around sunset.

The one above was taken at Sunset.  You can see the Pier 39 flags in the background blowing in the cool breeze.

The above was taken at night.  It’s kind of surreal looking with the stark dark background but it is a tourist’s delight getting photos in front of the tree.  Enjoy!

Mayor Moscone & Supervisor Milk - In Rememberance

Published by jodapoet under News, San Francisco Edit This

Thirty years ago on November 27, 1978 Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated at City Hall in San Francisco.    To the surprise of everyone, supervisor Dan White who was an ex police officer and fireman was the one pulling the trigger.  He had slipped into a back door located on Van Ness Avenue and made his way to Mayor Moscone’s office with a loaded gun and extra ammunition.   Dan White had resigned from his post as Supervisor earlier that month and had wanted his job back only to be told that it was no longer available and that the three people who were being considered were Harvey Milk, Carol Ruth Silver and Willie Brown.  This angered White and as a result went to City Hall to presumably talk to the Mayor.  However it’s been reported that he confessed to an officer right before his suicide in 1984 that he planned to kill not only the mayor and Harvey Milk but Silver and Willie Brown as well.

The now Senator Diane Feinstein was the president of the board of supervisors at that time and automatically became Mayor when Moscone was killed.   Dan White was arrested and stood trial.  The famous “Twinkie Defense” came into play when his defense attorneys cited that he had been eating Twinkies beforehand and as a result it diminished his mental capacity.  Now, I know you are all laughing but this is a true story.  Evidently, this ridiculous story worked because White, rather than being convicted of first degree murder which would have been a life sentence for him,  was convicted of the lesser voluntary manslaughter which only held a few years in prison.  He was paroled in 1984, let out of jail and within a few months committed suicide in his home.

Supervisor Harvey Milk and Dan White were elected as district supervisors in 1977.  Supervisor Milk was the first openly gay person to be elected as a city official.  White was of the conservative religious right background and was against the liberal politics of Milk, Silver or Willie Brown.  To put it simply racist and homophobic.

I at that time was working in a bank on 8th and Market Streets which is  only a few blocks away from City Hall.  Even though it’s been 30 years I vividly remember that day.  In an instant we heard sirens blazing and police cars, ambulances and unmarked vehicles coming at every angle speeding to City Hall.  We had no idea what had happened and thought maybe there was a protest or something going on however this went on for a matter of at least 10 minutes.   We then realized something horrible had happened.   One of our customers walked in and gave us the news and we were shocked and horrified.

A few months after when White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter which was basically a slap on the wrist, the White Night Riots took place.  The gay community came out in force marching down Market Street from Castro to City Hall and beyond, breaking windows, doors and causing damage to all the businesses along that route.  The next morning when we came to work, our bank’s windows were all broken with some damage inside the bank as well.  We were not even allowed to enter the bank until the police were done and the windows were boarded.  While I am all for protests and I can certainly understand how angry these people were at that verdict, we all were, I don’t understand how damaging private property helps. Every year at this time there is a candlelight vigil held in San Francisco in honor of Moscone and Milk.  These were two great men who were taken way too soon at the hands of a racist/homophobic individual who at the end did the right thing and took his own life.

Fire Juggler

Pier 39 is a hub for entertainment 365 days a year.  In the front you will always find some musical performers and at the center stage by the carousel towards the end of the pier you will find fire eaters, jugglers etc… I was spending the evening at the pier last night and decided to see what was going on center stage when I came across the fire juggler.  I have never seen him before and he was actually quite good.  The pier surprisingly was packed for Thanksgiving day so he had quite the audience.  The children loved him.  So, I thought I’d share a little bit of him with you.  I snapped this short clip while he was juggling fire.  Enjoy!

St. Anthony Foundation

Published by jodapoet under San Francisco, Travel Edit This

The St. Anthony foundation which has been in San Francisco for over 50 years is comprised of a meal, clothing and a free medical program.  The St. Anthony dining room serves the homeless and low income with food everyday.  They average about 2,500 meals per day.   On Thanksgiving that number doubles.  They open around 11:00 a.m. and are there until evening.  They rely on volunteers and donations for this program.

They also have a free medical facility to take care of patients with basic care.  10,000 San Franciscans use these services on an annual basis. There is also a clothing and housewares programs which rely on clothes and housewares donations.  It is set up like a store where low income and the homeless visit and can find clothing and different items for themselves and their families.

Without this organization in San Francisco there would be many more people hungry and cold especially during the holidays and Winter months.  They provide an enormous humanitarian service to all those in need and especially today I would like to give thanks for their caring and generosity.

Open Letter To San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom

Published by jodapoet under News, San Francisco Edit This

This letter is being posted on behalf of my friend Carmen Henesy.

Dear Mayor Newsom,

The National Center for Victims of Crime estimates that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will have experienced an episode of sexual abuse while younger than 18 years.

Children who are abused or neglected are more likely to become criminal offenders as adults. A National Institute of Justice study found “that childhood abuse increased the odds of future delinquency and adult criminality overall by 40 percent” (Widom, 1992).

Consequences of child sexual abuse range “from chronic depression to low self-esteem to sexual dysfunction to multiple personalities. A fifth of all victims develop serious long-term psychological problems, according to the American Medical Association.

Sexual abuse of children is a major public health issue with possible long reaching sequeale that can have many effects on this city.

Who will care for our most vulnerable victims, those from birth to 18 years of

age, who have suffered the most horrible crimes?  The four registered nurses at CASARC  are part of a multidisciplinary team that includes CPS, social services, the police department, its specialized inspectors in the field of sex abuse, the office of the district attorney and allied professions in the community.  They have provided services to the children of San Francisco on a 24 hour a day/seven day a week basis.  We are familiar with all these various systems and the unique needs of these disenfranchised and traumatized children.  These children deserve our expertise as they try to heal.

Among us, we cumulatively have over sixty-five years of experience in the field of child sexual abuse.  As specially trained child interviewers, we enable even the young child to tell about what happened to him which makes it more likely to have a successful criminal prosecution. These children have one chance to tell what happened in a forensically defensible interview.  Accomplishing this requires consummate skill on the part of the interviewer.  CASARC nurses are the experts at doing this. In addition, we all have extensive training and education in the areas of child development and forensics,  We provide evidence collection, crisis intervention, case management, outreach and education in the community and consultation to other professionals.

As one juvenile inspector told us, “You are our 911.”

If your child were ill, would you take him to an adult medical provider or a pediatrician?  In these cases of the most heinous crime against innocent children, CASARC nurses are the specialists in every aspect of meeting the needs of the young victim.

The proposed budget cuts will leave only one RN at CASARC, decimating an agency that has served San Francisco children for over a quarter of a century.  It will eliminate the one Spanish speaking nurse and the only African American nurse that has ever been regularly employed at CASARC in its twenty-five plus year existence.

What a sad legacy for your administration to leave behind!

Carmen Henesy, RN, SANE-A
Child & Adolescent Support, Advocacy, and  Resource Center ( CASARC )

Embarcadero Ice Skating Rink

Each year during the holidays San Francisco hosts ice skating rinks both in Union Square and the Embarcadero at Justin Herman Plaza.  The video above shows a short clip which I took yesterday at the Embarcadero rink around noon.  It is a very popular activity for both children and adults alike.  What’s funny is that you can find people ice skating out there in 80 degree weather.  We don’t have seasons here in San Francisco so no matter what the weather is, there are people ice skating.

There has been talk of making the rink a permanent fixture in that area and using it as a roller skating rink the rest of the year.  I think that’s a great idea.  Only time will tell.

I’ve never tried the outdoor rink and probably won’t with my “balance challenges” however it does look like so much fun.  A great little spot to take the family for a couple of hours of fun.

The Bush Man of San Francisco

He’s been on the streets since the 1980’s scaring tourists for a living.  He picks a spot along Fisherman’s Wharf, usually in a high traffic area and will hide behind some Eucalyptus branches and jump out at unsuspecting passersby.  He claims to earn a good living doing this from about $40,000 to $50,00 per year.  And just the fact that he’s been out there so long is a testament to his earnings.  I remember him being there years ago.

There have been times, in fact one that I remember recently where he scared a tourist to a point that she fell off the sidewalk and injured herself.  Although she did not sue the merchants in the area complained and tried to get rid of the bush man.   For liability reasons they wanted him gone.  He has been charged with a few misdemeanors however the cases are always thrown out of court.  Some tourists are annoyed by his presence though most like him.  It is one of those oddities, the only in San Francisco types of entertainment.  Because I live here I always know where he is and have never been “scared” because while walking past, I’ll either look and smile or say hi to him.The way I see it he’s an entrepreneur making a living, enjoying what he is doing and providing tourists with some great stories and photo opportunities when they arrive back home.  He’s really harmless and a nice guy.  So, if you are ever in the wharf area and see some eucalyptus branches on the sidewalk that look as if they don’t belong there - beware, the bush man.  The video above I found on YouTube and is a clip of Mr. bush man in action.

Shakespeare Garden

Shakespeare Garden is a hidden jewel amongst the natural landscapes within Golden Gate Park.  It is nestled near towering trees adjacent to the California Academy of Sciences building and very near the Botanical Gardens and the Japanese tea garden.  I took this photo a few days ago on a warm afternoon. Due to it being November the flower beds have been replaced by greenery but will be peeking through around February.  This is a cozy little spot to read, meditate or just enjoy for it’s serene and aesthetic value.  During Spring and Summer months you can find many a wedding party enjoying the surroundings as well as people shooting videos and so much more.  While there I penned this quick poem
Shakespeare Garden

And the leaves speak
through silent branches
their voices carried
by winds of change.

Mother Earth colors
Autumnal hues
warmly toasted
reflections of the sun.

November noon
debuts a play
where nature’s performance
unfolds seasons.

And the stage is set.

The Golden Gate

The day began with mist and grey cloud cover.  I wanted to take a short jaunt to the Golden Gate for some new photos.  I knew that the bridge would be shrouded in fog so I decided to wait for another day.  While blogging and doing some work online the sun peeked through the window so I grabbed my jacket and camera and off I went to the bridge praying the blue skies and sun would remain.  As you can see from the above photo we were blessed with a glorious afternoon and I was able to get some beautiful shots of the Golden Gate.  I basically wanted to change the header on this blog with a new bridge photo however I was way too close to the bridge to get the size to work with the header template.  So, I’ll have to take a trip along with Marina Green one of these days to get more photos.  Enjoy!
