The Blue & Gold Fleet

The bio diesel powered ferries and tour boats of the Blue and Gold Fleet can carry anywhere from about 300 to 600 passengers aboard both the outer and lower enclosed decks.  This fleet is the largest in San Francisco.  It serves tours along San Francisco bay from Pier 39 to up close and personal with the sea lions, past Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge.  The waters under the bridge do get choppy at times so the boat will be rocking.  It is quite the experience to sail along the bay and view San Francisco’s waterfront along with all it’s high-rise stars to include Coit Tower, The Transamerica Building, The Bank of America Building and Ghirardelli Square.  You will also be able to see aquatic park and Hyde Street Pier which houses the Balclutha.  It is an hour cruise.  And, if you plan on taking this cruise it is imperative you buy your tickets in advance as the rides are full even during low season.

These boats also act as ferries to service Sausalito, Vallejo, Oakland and some points North.  It is very easy to travel the Bay Area if you are visiting San Francisco.  Although this particular boat does not service Alcatraz is sails right by it and will offer a stunning view of the island.  The photo opportunities along this route are endless.  I managed to take these photos on a beautiful clear day while at Pier 39.

There is a snack bar on all the boats which serve hot dogs etc… and both alcohol and non alcoholic drinks.  I am not positive on this but I think you can bring your own snacks as well.  I took this cruise a few times and am always in awe of the breathtaking views.  There is something very special about sailing up to and under the Golden Gate bridge even for a native such as myself.

This fleet now also has what they call the Rocket-boat which is basically a high speed boat which literally rockets across the bay to the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, around AT&T Park and Alcatraz all in 30 minutes.  While it sounds exciting I’m not quite the daredevil but it is a popular ride for tourists. There are also many package deals available from the Blue and Gold Fleet to include different shows at Pier 39 etc… So make sure you ask and check their website which can be found here at http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com
