The DeYoung Museum

The DeYoung Museum celebrated it’s rebirth grand opening on October 15th of 2005. It is surrounded by palm trees, a beautiful waterfall, gardens and sculptures to include a Dale Chihuly lighted obelisk. The above photo I snapped about a month ago and also shows the tower above which is actually an elevator inside. From the top there is a panoramic view of San Francisco which is stunning on a clear day.
The museum itself is of a grand stature housing many collections to include American paintings, sculptured art from various periods, African and Oceanic artifacts, textiles, graphic arts and much more.
The Colossal Head- At the time I took this photo the head was housed in the lobby of the museum. There are graphic arts and contemporary paintings and sculptures from the abstract to the more traditional. Something for everyone.
When I snapped this photo I did not take notes as to the artwork or artist. I’ll have to remember to do that next visit. Also, the DeYoung is very gracious in allowing photos to be taken without flash.
A painting of old San Francisco titled Embarcadero and Clay.
To view the entire collections you would need to spend at least two to three hours there. The museum also offers many activities for children and adults. There are poetry readings, dance performances lectures and tours available. Their Friday night programs offer many of what I’ve just mentioned in the Koret House auditorium which is housed within the museum. During the Fridays night performances there is a no host bar and dinner available as well. I’ve been to so many poetry readings there and the acoustics are great.
The museum is located within Golden Gate Park next to the Japanese Tea Garden and the Botanical Gardens. For more detailed information you can visit their website at http://www.famsf.org/deyoung/

Jodapoet,
I lived in a wonderful flat on Fulton St X Stanyan that had a commanding view of the Golden Gate and the Bridge. I lived out there for 15 years! I did a brief stint in So Cal, but S.F. was and always will be my perfect place to live !
Wow, that area is fantastic for views. It’s good to hear people miss SF. I sometimes take it for granted but all in all it’s my home
Thanks Mikey.
Have you seen the Asian | American | Modern show downstairs (it’s combined with the Maya Lin exhibit)? Extraordinary work by people I had never heard of before. I grew up in NY and went to the MoMA there a zillion times, and a lot of the stuff that gets exhibited from that period seems very familiar. Seeing this show was like finding a wing in a MoMA that for decades had been sealed up and forgotten, until one day it was discovered, and then opened to the world — and it all seems so fresh because it’s so unfamiliar.
