San Francisco - The Bike Friendliest City In America?

Published by jodapoet under News, San Francisco, Travel Edit This

The powers that be want San Francisco to become the “bike friendliest city in America.”  While I have nothing against bikes or bike riders I personally think enough is enough.  The above video shows a critical mass demonstration which is a monthly event here in San Francisco.  Basically bike riders take to the streets and when I say streets I mean major streets and intersections in order to prove their point that bike riders should have the same rights as vehicles.  I am all for equal rights and demonstrating to make your point but I feel it is an “in your face protest” by these people.  They stop cars during rush hour trying to get home from a days work, they stop pedestrians trying to get where they are going because the streets are blocked and many of them are just downright mean and rude.

The bike friendly plan calls for reconfiguring streets and parking spots of which there is a grand shortage right now all to accommodate the bike riders.  It allows for 240 miles of lanes above and beyond the already 200 miles we already have in San Francisco for these riders.  There are bike paths and lanes already all over the city.  How many more do we need?  I’ve seen so many accidents and near misses due to bike riders weaving in and out of traffic, not to mention riding on sidewalks weaving in and out of pedestrians.  The worst is on the Golden Gate Bridge.  There are literally dozens and dozens per day riding along the bridge side by side with people walking across the bridge.  It is extremely dangerous and should be halted.  Mind you I realize that riding bikes along the bridge is fun and a “touristy thing to do” however I think that a specific bike lane would be beneficial rather than a co-mingling of bikes and walkers.

There was a lawsuit filed stating that until an environmental impact study is complete that nothing will happen.  Only time will tell.
