Charging Fees To Drive In San Francisco?

Published by jodapoet under News, San Francisco, Travel Edit This

Well I’ve heard it all now.  Mind you I do not have a car and use public transportation but I just have to comment on this proposal.  There is a proposal being considered to charge drivers who use their cars in San Francisco during the rush hour periods from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.  It is called “congestion pricing” and is being used in some countries around the world.  The areas of the city being discussed are the financial districts and downtown San Francisco.  It would be implemented in the same manner as the fast track system.  Traffic lights would be set to track the drivers license plate and then a bill would be sent to the driver for a fee of $3.00 per trip.  Now this does not seem like much unless of course you commute to and from work.  They say it would generate anywhere from 35 to 65 million dollars per year and could be used to update our municipal railway system etc…

Now I’m all for updating our MUNI system but at the expense of drivers trying to get to work?  I just don’t think that is very fair.  I do think it will prompt people to take public transportation but still I don’t think it’s fair to charge people to drive their cars.  Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas? Why should we charge our own residents for driving in their own hometown?  There has to be a better way to generate funds for MUNI.  I’m not sure what it would be but penalizing people for driving during rush hour is certainly not the answer.
