The Financial District Buildings

Published by jodapoet under San Francisco, Travel Edit This

I worked at a free jazz concert @ The Crocker Galleria located in the financial district of San Francisco.  After the concert I decided to go into Chinatown for some photos and maybe a little shopping.  However, in the past few days the city has been experiencing Winter which is very rare.  We normally do not have seasonal weather in San Francisco.  It was very cold though sunny after the concert so I began walking towards Chinatown which is only a few blocks away.  By the time I arrived it began raining again so I stopped by a little Asian art shop and bought a CD of traditional Chinese music.  By this time the skies turned a grayish white so I decided to head home via the Transamerica and Bank of America buildings.  While walking down California Street I was also able to get a short, short clip of a cable car which I’ll post tomorrow.  I turned left and saw this great shot of the Transamerica building.  I liked it because it was so dark along the street yet the building just seemed to shine.

The pyramid building as we call it boasts 48 floors and is one of the 100 tallest buildings in the world.  Located on Montgomery street in the heart of the financial district it is over 800 feet high and was constructed in 1972.    It houses offices and has also been the target of threatened terrorist attacks.

52 stories and over 780 feet high the Bank of America building is the second tallest building in San Francisco.  It’s founder was A.P. Giannini and there is a plaque honoring him on the grounds.

In the 1970’s there were two movies that were filmed on the grounds of the Bank of America building - Dirty Harry and The Towering Inferno.  I remember watching the Towering Inferno and thinking to myself that this scenario could actually take place because it looked so real.  The building is so tall that while on the elevators on the top floors, they actually shake as if you are experiencing an earthquake.  It is a gorgeous building inside and out.
