The Golden Gate Railway Express

Published by jodapoet at 11:40 am under Art, Leisure, Nature, San Francisco, Travel Edit This

What’s new at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco?  It’s called the Golden Gate Railway Express.  It is their newest exhibit and will be open through April 19, 2009.  Created by Andy Vogt, it is a celebration of San Francisco with G-gauge trains, landmark city sites and living lush greenery to include orchids and dwarf plants.

The layout is amazing.  San Francisco and the staff at the Conservatory were dedicated to displaying this exhibit as a sustainable green display which uses recycled items for each of the landmark buildings.  Their mission to bring awareness of the environment and show people the benefits of recycling.  There are 10 landmark sites which have been replicated for this show.

The entrance to Chinatown which if you look closely is made of computer parts.

Coit Tower made with mini blinds.

Ghirardelli Square made of old brown switch-plates and an actual chocolate bar for the sign.

The Ferry Building made of an old cheese grater with forks and spoons.

The Transamerica Pyramid Building made with over a thousand computer keys.

Last but not least one of the two trains speeding across the tracks.

The admission fee for adults is $5.00 which gets you into the exhibit and the conservatory as well.  I will have a post on the conservatory itself tomorrow.  I also have some video of this exhibition which I will post in another blog.

This exhibit is fun for everyone whether you are a train enthusiast or not.  This is fun for the entire family and should not be missed.  For more info visit The Conservatory of Flowers Website.

That looks like fun. And very cleverly designed — the Transamerica Pyramid made out of computer keys! What a great idea!
