San Francisco Union Square

Published by jodapoet at 12:03 pm under Travel Edit This

Union Square in San Francisco is at the heart of the city’s shopping and theatre district.  It serves as a concert and performance venue throughout the year and is surrounded by hotels such as the Sir Francis Drake and shops from Macy’s  to Neiman Marcus to Tiffany’s to your average everyday souvenir outlet.  During the Holidays it is the place to be to experience the hustle and bustle of Christmas.  The Powell and Market cable car line whisks it’s way by the square every few minutes.   This time of year is what I call the holiday sardine can.  It is packed with shoppers and sightseers.

The Union square Christmas tree is decorated with over 5,000 lights of which residents and people from around the bay area donated $5.00 per light to decorate the tree.  It is a beautiful, full and gallant sight to see standing tall in the middle of the square.

The stores, hotels, restaurants and shops around the square are strutting their stuff in celebration of the holidays.  The streets at night are lit up with holiday lights and lend a festive atmosphere to the shopping district.  Macy’s windows are “the” attraction during the holidays.  With live puppies, which you can read about at Free In SF  animated Christmas scenes to their chic window dressings it is truly a sight to see.

The above video is a clip of the ice skating rink at the square.  This rink draws crowds throughout the holiday season and is a quite festive way to experience the spirit of San Francisco.  Enjoy and Happy Holidays to all.

It looks like a true winter wonderland at Christmas! The photo brought back happy memories of visiting San Francisco in summer 2001. I hope to return again sometime - perhaps at Christmas?
