Forbes Island - San Francisco
Forbes Island Restaurant is a curious little spot nestled between Piers 39 and 41 in San Francisco. With Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background it is the perfect setting for a small eatery. However at first glance with it’s mini lighthouse, palm trees and white sand decks you would never really know what it was. It is basically a restaurant on a floating island. There are small various banquet rooms to accommodate private parties and events, a below sea level dining room and a lounge and bar area above the water with some fantastic views of the bay, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate and our own resident sea lions.
There is a small boat which provides service from Pier 39 to the island which takes only a few minutes. The below sea level dining area is a bit dark, damp and if you are in any way prone to motion sickness, this is not the restaurant for you. In my opinion it feels as if I was eating in a submarine. I also happen to be claustrophobic so this was not the ultimate setting for my taste.
The food however is very good though expensive. The service is top notch, probably the best I’ve had in San Francisco. It affords an intimate ambiance with low lighting and small table settings.
Being there at Sunset brought the most dramatic pink and purple sky over the horizon with the Golden Gate and Marin Headlands in the background. It was just sheer natural beauty. It was simply breathtaking.

I always wondered what that place was like! Thanks for the description.
Beautiful photograph of the sunset!
Thanks, the sky was so dramatic I had to get a shot of it.
