Get up close and personal with sharks, stingrays, jelly fish, bat rays and twenty thousand other aquatic animals at the Aquarium by the Bay located at Pier 39 in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco. There are sevengill sharks that grow to 10 feet long with a menacing presence in the waters.
Moving walkways will take you on a journey through three hundred feet of tunnels under San Francisco Bay. The tunnels are surrounded by clear, durable acrylic to keep out the 700,000 gallons of filtered bay water.
A state of the art creation which cost the city 40 million dollars, it is a favorite of children and adults alike. It was opened in 1996 and renovated in 2001. There is always a naturalist on hand to guide you through the tunnels and answer any questions you may have.
Each day is filled with “free with admission events” such as:
1. Dive Encounter - Where you can ask questions of the divers in the tanks.
2. Bat Ray Feeding - Learn what and how the bat rays eat.
3. Nemo & Friends - Meet Nemo and find out why he can’t live in the bay.
4. Sevengill Shark Feeding - See the divers feed these huge creatures.
5. Sea Stories - Sit in on story time for children. It’s fascinating.
6. Shark Talk - Find out why sharks are our friends.
